Roald Dahl – The Witches

The Witches is actually a sinister read, a surprise from Roald Dahl when you consider that most of his work is non-threatening and not particularly scary even to a child. The Witches isn’t terrifying, but it’s certainly more of a ‘horrorstory than anything else he ever wrote.

And yet, and partly because of that, it’s still a damn good read, and one of my favourite books when I was a young child, despite the fact that I wanted to bury it in the garden and the fact that I couldn’t bring myself to watch the movie adaptation for fear of having a coronary.

Don’t let this put you off reading it to your kids, though – they could do a lot worse, and they’ll be playing Grand Theft Auto before you know it. They’re going to love this book, and you will too – let’s hope you don’t take a leaf out of Joey Tribbiani‘s book and put it in the freezer. In fact, I’d go so far as to recommend this before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, second to George’s Marvellous Medicine.
