Roald Dahl - The Witches

Roald Dahl – The Witches

The Witches is actually a sinister read, a surprise from Roald Dahl when you consider that most of his work is non-threatening and not particularly scary even to a child. The Witches isn’t terrifying, but it’s certainly more of a ‘horrorstory than anything else he ever wrote.

And yet, and partly because of that, it’s still a damn good read, and one of my favourite books when I was a young child, despite the fact that I wanted to bury it in the garden and the fact that I couldn’t bring myself to watch the movie adaptation for fear of having a coronary.

Don’t let this put you off reading it to your kids, though – they could do a lot worse, and they’ll be playing Grand Theft Auto before you know it. They’re going to love this book, and you will too – let’s hope you don’t take a leaf out of Joey Tribbiani‘s book and put it in the freezer.┬áIn fact, I’d go so far as to recommend this before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, second to George’s Marvellous Medicine.
