I’m pretty sure that I’d already read at least half of this book when I was a kid, but as an adult I thought it was wonderful. It has a sort of timeless quality to it that makes it feel like it could just as easily have been written yesterday.

I also liked how there was stuff there that you’d only pick up on as an adult, such as how the poppy field that put the adventurers to sleep was presumably a field of opium poppies. I think that gave it an extra edge that helped it to stay interesting for me as an adult reader.

All in all, I can see why Wizard of Oz is a children’s classic and I’m glad that I finally read it. It had some subtle undertones to it that I really enjoyed and the end result was a book that entertained me while making me think. It’s rare to find that from a children’s book.
