Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.

I’m not really sure what to make of this – it was noted in the acknowledgements that this book has been proofread at least twice, but I still think it could do with some further editing and proofreading, as well as a more imaginative cover. After all, the possibilities are virtually endless, and the current cover doesn’t do much for me – at the very least, I think the time on the clock tower could have changed.

Once you get past that, though, this is actually a pretty good book – I certainly enjoyed it, and so I feel bad for leaving a low rating, but I couldn’t get past the typos, the design and the layout. Loosely speaking, it follows the story of a guy who has a ‘time torch’, which allows him to see into the past but not to change it. It’s a pretty good interpretation of the grandfather paradox, and also a decent thriller once all hell breaks loose.

And one of the good things about it was that I whizzed through it – I wouldn’t have bothered to finish reading it, and thus discover that it had a decent story line, if it hadn’t been for the fact that I tore through it in a couple of days. I’d hesitate before actually recommending this, but I do think that you could do a lot worse. If you like time travel and espionage stuff, then check this out – bonus points for the author, for citing Asimov’s The End of Eternity.

Wow – I can’t even begin to explain how many twists and turns there are in this book, but it’s fascinating because it keeps you interested right up until the end, and some similar novels can leave you too muddled and confused to continue. Put simply, The End of Eternity is an epic love story set in the future, in which an exclusive organisation travels forwards and backwards through time to alter time’s cause-and-effect relationship.

Technician Andrew Harlan is used to calculating the MNC, the minimum necessary change – it could be that the loss of a dozen lives now will prevent all-out war in the future. But what happens when you fall in love, and you have to choose between what’s best for your lover and what’s best for the rest of humanity? That’s what Asimov explores, with an ability to think things through that’s rarely matched.

You see, I’ve made it sound complicated, and it is – nevertheless, Asimov’s smooth writing makes it a breeze to read.
