This book had a pretty slow start, but after the first thirty pages I really started to get into it – it’s just a strong start to a sci-fi series, nothing more and nothing less. And, because it’s a sci-fi novel, it’s going to be pretty tricky for me to talk about the plot, but I’ll give it a go.

Basically, there’s a guy called Alex Racine, who owns a ship which he uses to harvest asteroids. Alex works alone, but one day he discovers evidence of an alien spacecraft which has been crippled by an unknown assailant, and he pulls off an audacious manoeuvre to attempt to save it. Once on board, he meets with the ship’s computer, and eventually discovers that there are survivors.

I can’t say any more than that, but trust me – if you’re anything like me, you’ll enjoy it. A lot of the book’s reviewers have mentioned that it’s too ‘nice‘, because there’s no serious conflict between the two civilisations which meet each other. But there’s a third, and that’s the point – it’s not an action novel, it’s a suspense novel, and I personally really enjoyed it.

I don’t know if I’d recommend this to the average reader, because it’s obviously going to help if you’ve got an interest in the genre, but if you’re a fan of Asimov then you’ll probably enjoy this too. I know I certainly did, and whilst it did take me a relatively long time to read it, I enjoyed every second. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series – keep ’em peeled!
