H.G. Wells – The War of the Worlds
War of the Worlds blew me away like a Martian heat-ray – for some reason, I’d left it sitting on my bookshelf for over a year before I decided to read it. I thought it might take a long time to read, or that it would be tedious and uninteresting. I was wrong.
Wells’ writing is lucid and compelling, and he has a distinctive style that makes reading his work a pleasure. I’ll definitely be reading more of it – in particular, I’ve heard good things about The Time Machine. I think this could be the start of a long and fruitful relationship between myself and Mr. Wells.
The only downside was that I’d already seen the Hollywood film, and I couldn’t stop myself from imagining the Martians’ tripods as they appeared in the movie. Still, that’s not Wells’ fault, and the film was incredibly true to the novel in its depiction of the machines. It’s just a shame that it bastardised the plotline and moved it out of London, really. Go read the novel.
