Title: Are You Dave Gorman?
Author: Dave Gorman
Type: Non-Fiction
Page Count/Review Word Count: 374
Rating: 9/10
This is probably the funniest of Gorman’s books to date, quite possibly because it’s co-written with his ex-flatmate Danny Wallace, a man who’s equally well-known as Dave is for his entertaining personality and his desire to go off on weird adventures, the likes of which we can only dream about.
In this book, Danny and Dave travel around the world trying to meet 54 other people called Dave Gorman, purely because a drunken bet between the two men got a *little* out of hand. The concept behind the book is that simple, but their mission… well, it isn’t, as you’ll see when you buy a copy and read the book.
Dave also filmed a TV series based on his adventures, and that’s just as hilarious as the book is – the best part of it is, they’re not mutually exclusive. You can read the book and watch the series and still find both of them hilarious, mainly because the book allows him to expand on what he talked about in the series – of course, Danny Wallace is also far more prominent in the book, and his writing is even funnier than Dave’s, if such a thing is possible.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the adventure is the support that Dave and Danny are shown from all kinds of random people, including the other Daves – it turns out that almost everyone wants them to succeed, and you will too when you start reading it. I’m not going to tell you whether they manage it, but I will tell you that it almost doesn’t matter – the journey is more important than the destination.
And while I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, this one stands out on my bookshelf and gives you a great idea of how playful it is before you even open it up. And that’s the thing, you see – it’s brightly-coloured, brightly-written and a real joy to read, especially if you read it on your commute to work when you need a little cheering up. Now, let’s see if I can find 54 other people called ‘Dane Cobain’…
