Larry Weiner – Once Again with Blood

Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, Larry Weiner is an author friend of mine.

This book is the second book in Weiner’s triumphant Island series, and if you’ve read the first book – Paradise Rot – then you’ll know roughly what you’re getting into. The first book featured zombies, while this one revolves around vampires – but either way, they revolve around the shenanigans of former advertising executive Kyle Brightman. Weiner himself used to be an art director, which is why he’s able to paint such a vivid picture of life in the marketing department.

What we have here, then, is a collision between horror and comedy which verges on satire while it knocks your socks off with a plot that barrels along right up until the end. Weiner’s work is a lot of fun, but it also makes you think – especially when celebrities start to get involved and you realise that zombies and vampires have been living beneath our noses all of this time.

It’ll make you laugh and it’ll make you cry. Or at the very least, it’ll make you smile. You’ll also be supporting an indie author. What more do you need to convince you to buy it?

Larry Weiner – Paradise Rot

Disclaimer: Larry Weiner is published by Booktrope, the same publisher which released my debut novella, No Rest for the Wicked.

This book was of particular interest to me because Weiner has worked in the same industry as me – I believe he used to be an Art Director, like protagonist Kyle Brightman. Without giving too much away about the plot, I think I can safely tell you that Brightman is hired to bring tourists to a Caribbean island, but one with a twist. It’s ruled by zombies, a bit like an advertising agency.

Weiner describes the work as a parody, and whilst it does have some elements of parody, it also contains a lot of originality and a lot of innovation. It’s also the first book in a trilogy, and so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. And, as if this book wasn’t cool enough already, Mr. Weiner also designed the cover. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but this cover is so awesome that it was one of the main reasons why I bought it.

Paradise Rot didn’t let me down – it’s a great read by a great author, and I can’t wait to read more of Weiner’s work.
