Graham Greene – Ways of Escape

I’m usually a fan of Graham Greene’s work, but this one didn’t really catch my imagination – perhaps that’s because it tells the story of a series of real events, and so there’s not much for you to imagine. Whatever the reason, I just struggled to get as absorbed in it as I have with Greene’s other autobiographies.

That said, if you’re interested in travelling then you’re in for a treat, because Greene’s depictions of locations as diverse as Haiti, Vietnam, Kenya and Hollywood are gripping and evocative, presumably even more so if you’ve been to the locations in question. In fact, despite the fact that I didn’t enjoy it as much as A Sort of Life or A World of my Own, I still wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this if you’re a Graham Greene fan, or even if you’re a fan of great literature in general.

See, it’s always worth taking the chance to peer in to the mind of an author if you can, although this does seem to focus more on Greene’s travels than on his writing, both of which he referred to as “ways of escape”. But who knows? You might love it, and there’s a good chance that you’ll enjoy it at the very least. Best read if carried around while travelling.

Graham Greene – A World of my Own

This book can claim to be one of the more unique books in my collection – in it, Graham Greene writes about his dreams, making it the only book that I own that’s a log of somebody else’s dreams. If that doesn’t pique your curiosity, you’re crazy – I’m a vivid dreamer myself, and it’s fascinating to see how Greene’s dreams differ from (and, in some cases, resemble) mine.

It’s a short and sweet read, and one that you could easily read in a weekend. So why aren’t you reading it right now?
