I’m not sure whether I was expecting to enjoy this one or not. Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway used to be my most-hated book because we had to study it at university and they only gave us a week to read it. Throughout the entire course, it was the only book that I was unable to finish. But then I re-read it earlier this year and enjoyed it a lot more, possibly because I picked up the audio book.

To the Lighthouse is in much the same vein, and so if you’re looking for an action-packed story where loads of stuff happens then this isn’t the book for you. If you’re interested in character studies and investigations into the social and cultural norms of the early 20th century then you’re going to enjoy it.

Woolf also has a way with words which is quite frankly beautiful, and so if you just lose yourself in the language then it’s a pleasure. I also loved the metaphors that she used, and I think she set out to do a job and she achieved it. But I also didn’t particularly enjoy actually reading it.
