James Joyce – Dubliners
I was pleasantly surprised by Dubliners. I’d heard a few other people say that they didn’t like it because it felt like nothing was happening, and while I can see how that’s true to a certain extent, that’s not really the point of it. It’s more like an examination of the social conditions in Dublin.
I find it hard to say exactly why I liked this, just as I’d find it hard to give you a summary of what happens. It was mostly the way the language was used – but I also think a huge shout out is due to the publisher here. From what I gather, it’s part of a parent company that has a number of different imprints. It’s called Pulp! The Classics, and it’s fricken awesome.
They basically take classic books like this, which are now out of copyright and free for anyone to republish, and put a ‘pulp’ twist on them, so they have epic covers and stunning layouts and just feel amazing when they’re in your hands. It might sound like a gimmick, but I think it’s a noble mission. It makes classical literature more appealing to the masses, and that can only be a good thing.
All in all, you should get this book if you get a chance to – but you should go out of your way to get the Pulp! The Classics version. And they haven’t paid me to say this.
