I’m going to be honest, I was pretty disappointed by this book. I’ve read and enjoyed a fair amount of Susan Hill so far, but this one is easily the most disappointing of her books so far. It’s just a dull, meandering story with an unnecessary twist at the end.

Still, I understand what Hill was going for, and I think it would work for some people. The problem is that I just wasn’t the target audience, I guess. It was an investigation of the relationship between two young boys and unfortunately for me, I didn’t like either of them. That’s a problem when it’s the whole point of the book, and so reading it was a little bit like pulling teeth.

Then there’s the fact that there’s a super long sequence in which the two boys get lost in a forest, and if I’m honest, I kind of hoped that neither of them would come out. That didn’t happen, but it did take a darker turn right at the end. Alas, it just wasn’t enough to save it. So would I recommend this one? Hell no, but I would recommend Susan Hill in general. Just not this book, unfortunately.
