Peter Hughes – Allotment Architecture

Peter Hughes is another one of the poets on Reality Street’s roster, and this is the perfect example of the sort of innovative work that the independent press seeks to promote. Hughes writes with all of the passion of the poets of old, but with a modern touch and a cheeky disavowal of poetry’s well-established traditions.

If poetry isn’t your thing then you’ll either hate this book or have your mind changed completely, and it’s up to you if you want to take that risk. But I’m a fan of experimental stuff, and I’m going to use one of the poet’s own lines to describe how his work left me feeling – “so moved & / disconcerted / that at the end / he went to put / his hat on / & couldn’t find / his head.”
