Patsy Jawo – For the Love of I

I had mixed feelings about this book – the poetry was excellent in some places and pretty iffy in others, and one thing that struck me was that Jawo is pretty good at one-liners, and that a lot of her poems contain short little lines that would look great on motivational postcards.
On the other hand, there’s plenty of cliche in here as well – it seems to me as though the book would have been better if it had been shorter, because then Jawo could have presented only the best of the best of her work. That said, it’s still laid out quite nicely – the pages include illustrations of a quill, and the book is separated into four different sections of fifty poems each, along with the occasional bonus poem at the end of the section to keep things interesting.
This book was sent to me by Austin Macauley, who’ve sent me a number of poetry books over the last six months. This one is one of the better ones, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for some “inspirational poetry” – this certainly fits the bill, or it would do if inspirational poetry is your sort of thing.
As for me, I like poetry that makes you think, and surprisingly, this fit the bill – this is the sort of book that challenges your preconceptions and makes you rethink things. Another advantage is the fact that the poems are pretty short – they’re just the right length to get the point across.
