This was okay, I guess. I mean, it’s a pretty old book and it’s aimed at children, and so I’d say that it hasn’t aged particularly well. Don’t get me wrong, there were a couple of great lines here and there, and overall I did enjoy it for the most part. It just wasn’t spectacular, and I’m starting to think that’s a common theme with Twain. It’s a bit of a shame, really.

Still, if you can get past the occasional slowness and the habitual racism, there is quite a lot to like here. Sawyer is, in general at least, quite an endearing character, and I liked some of the tricks that he played. For example, he was able to convince people that whitewashing a fence was so much fun that they should pay him for the opportunity to do it. They literally paid him to do his chores.

Still, it started to drag for me at around the half way point, and by 75% of the way through, I was ready to read something else. The same thing happened with The Prince and the Pauper, and so perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised it happened. Oh well!
