I’ve read a couple of Steinbeck books before, and so far I’ve enjoyed each one of them. True, I have to be in the right mood to read him, but there’s something about his writing that feels so alive that when I have that itch and I need it scratched, no other author will do.
This one was like his other work, both hopeful and bleak at the same time and showing some of the down-and-outs in Steinbeck’s society. They’re still recognisable today, and that’s what makes his work the must-read, modern classical stuff that it is. I wish I was that good.
