This is the third and final book of the Foundation trilogy, although Asimov later added to it and so I don’t know if it can actually be called a trilogy. It’s not a bad trilogy I guess, and it’s one that’s hailed as a sci-fi masterpiece, but I still think that the whole trilogy is kind of overrated.
What I will say is that the first book was fun because I was experiencing a huge universe for the second time, and then there was a bit of a dip during the second one that was rectified with this one. Suddenly the story line and the world building all started to pay off.
But still, I just can’t help feeling that as a reader, I would have preferred a collection of his short stories, even though I know that’s blasphemous to most Asimov fans. I applaud the breadth of his vision and what it is that he’s achieved here, I just don’t think that it was much fun to read.
So would I recommend it? To be honest, I could quite happily have stuck after the first Foundation book and would have been happy if it wasn’t for me being such a completionist. It’s a huge milestone, but Asimov has much better books.
