I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Oh, the cover isn’t anything exceptional and the overall quality isn’t amazing, but that’s not really the point of it. The main concept – that of two hundred pieces of flash fiction – is what this is all about, and it does a pretty good job of it.
Oh sure, there are the occasional cliches here and there and the odd story that fails to grab your imagination, but when they’re as short as they are here then that’s no biggie. For my part, I thought it was pretty impressive, and it definitely lived up to the expectations that I had when I was going into it. In fact, it’s made me think about doing something similar myself – flash fiction can be pretty effective when it’s done well, and Helen Keeling-Marston has clearly put a lot of thought into it all. Definitely worth a read.
