I’ve been a friend and a fan of Hans’ for a while now, but I hadn’t heard of this series until he got in touch with me and asked me if I wanted to read his new release, which is the third and final book in the trilogy. I asked if he’d send me the first one instead, and he ended up sending all three.
This is YA fantasy set in our world with quite a few of the usual tropes, most notably the idea of a chosen one. But just because a book uses common tropes, it doesn’t mean that it falls into cliché, and I thought this was a pretty good effort, especially for an indie author. The layout was great, the story was well thought out and cohesive, and even though I’m not the biggest reader of YA fantasy as a genre, I was compelled to keep reading.
Most of all, though, I appreciated the message behind the book. It confronts issues like fracking and animal welfare in such a way that didn’t feel too heavy-handed. It’s an important message to get out there, and I think Hans did a great job of things. So yeah!
