Graham Greene - Twenty One Stories

Graham Greene – Twenty One Stories

This is probably the first ever collection of literary short stories that I truly enjoyed, and it’s also the first bit of Graham Greene’s work that I ever read – nowadays, he’s one of my favourite writers, and I still have great memories of the first time I read Greene’s twenty one stories and first fell in love with his work.

The reason why I picked it up in the first place is a little strange – one of Greene’s stories, ‘The Destructors‘, was mentioned in the movie Donnie Darko, and that was one of my favourite movies at the time. In the film, it was explained that it was a short story about a group of kids who broke in to someone’s house, found a stash of money and set fire to it, just to watch the world burn and fall apart.

And that’s a pretty typical theme for Graham Greene, and so if you like that kind of dark, depressing story-line then this book is for you. I can’t really explain how highly I recommend it – please, please buy a copy.
