I’ll admit straight away that this isn’t the sort of book that I’d usually go out and buy – as a supernatural thriller, it contrasts with my usual library of alternative classics and modern fantasy. That said, I actually really enjoyed it, and although I did spot the occasional typo, there weren’t enough to make me mark it down. You get what you expect, when you support an independent author.
The story-line itself is fairly strong, and although you can spot the occasionally convention here and there, Hart is experimental enough to introduce her own twists and turns and to breathe some life in to a genre that I thought couldn’t be improved. I was also impressed with the sexual tension between the characters, and the relish with which she writes about the twisted deaths of some of the central characters. It scared me a little bit, and I’m pretty sure that that’s what she was aiming for.
Oh, there are better books out there, but there are plenty that are worse as well, and if you’re in to the genre then I’d heartily recommend it. Even if you’re not, try it – you might enjoy it, and I sense that Hart would be delighted to welcome another supernatural reader in to the fold.
