Charles Dickens - A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol

I must admit that I wasn’t expecting great things from this – everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol, and so in a way the first read of it is like reading a book that you’ve also read. I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of Christmas (bah, humbug!) and I’m also not a particular lover of Dickens – the signs weren’t looking good.

But I was pleasantly surprised – Dickens’ classic work is actually a delight to read, a brilliant book that you could read to your kids despite the occasional heavy language, and all of the characters are beautifully conceived and represented. Scrooge himself turns out to be remarkably three-dimensional, and it’s a far cry from the way that he’s represented in popular culture – I could relate to him, and Dickens’ moral hit home.
