I’ve been reading quite a lot of Huxley lately, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve enjoyed it all so far. From what I understand, this is the first of his novels, and it’s a pretty good effort for a first novel. It’s also a great reminder of what I loved about Antic Hay, because his early writing style has something reminiscent of John Steinbeck about it.
I also liked the fact that this is set in England, so perhaps it was more like Steinbeck mixed with Agatha Christie, if Christie dropped the murder mysteries (and the plot altogether) and focussed entirely on the characters and the way they think and act. It’s kind of like a character study, and I’m all for it.
It’s also a decent length, especially for a book that’s more about ideas than anything else. If it had been much longer, I might have struggled to stay focussed. But I didn’t!
