Smut is now one of my new favourite Alan Bennett books, and that’s saying something because I always enjoy his writing. I think the reason why I enjoyed this so much is that we basically get two for the price of one, two delightfully smutty novellas that aren’t so smutty that you wouldn’t be able to give a copy to your grandma.

I particularly enjoyed the first story, The Greening of Mrs Donaldson. That’s because it had a cool concept, that of a middle-aged woman whose husband has died and who decides to start working as a physicians’ assistant/model. Basically, she’s brought into a medical school to pose as a patient so that the students can learn from her.

The second story, The Shielding of Mrs Forbes, was pretty good too, it just wasn’t as good as the first. But either way, the two of them go together well and the collection as a whole is fantastic. I can’t think of a single way it could have been improved, which is why I gave it a solid 5/5. Happy days!
