Agatha Christie – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

I’m not going to lie, I was a little disappointed by this book. I mean, sure – it’s an Agatha Christie detective novel, and so a certain extent you know what you’re getting, but it’s been hyped up as one of her best and to be honest, I thought it was nothing more than mediocre.

Sure, there was a twist at the end that took me by surprise, but that’s par for the course in a good detective novel. And there’s also the inimitable Hercule Poirot along for the journey, although Hastings isn’t here. I just found that other than Poirot – who wasn’t even at his best here – there just weren’t many characters that I found interesting or easy to relate to.

Loosely speaking, the story follows the subsequent investigation after a woman called Mrs Ferrars commits suicide. She poisoned her husband, but nobody suspected her – except for her blackmailer – until she couldn’t stand it any longer and took the only way out she felt she had available to her, leaving a letter to the man that she loved where she explained it all. And then Roger Ackroyd – the lover – dies, and Pandora’s box is opened. Good, but not great.
