The Queen of Crime is back with another Miss Marple adventure. Don’t worry, though – if you’re like me then Marple always annoyed you in some slight, indescribably way. Luckily, her presence in this novel is slight at best, and the real hero is the robust Inspector Neele, who really does most of the legwork.
Of course, Marple comes in at the end to set the record straight and to reveal who the real murderer really is – I’m not going to spoil it for you, but it did come as a surprise. As with all of Christie’s novels, though, the fun comes from the journey.
The vast majority of the characters in A Pocket Full of Rye are fundamentally unlikable, particularly old Mr. Fortescue, whose death kicks off the investigation in the first place. Having said that, while I normally struggle to enjoy a book when I don’t like the characters, their petty insecurities are a plot device that helps the story keep moving .
