I didn’t even know these things existed, how cool! This is basically a comic adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Mort, although you can’t really call it a graphic novel because it’s so heavily truncated. Entire parts of the story have been removed to make it all fit, although it stills works. It would be a pretty good way to get a kid into the Discworld, so there’s that.

Terry Pratchett – The Colour of Magic

The Colour of Magic is the novel where it all began – the very first book in the Discworld series. Personally, I thought it was okay, but it wasn’t fantastic – Pratchett got better later on, but maybe I think that because the series starts out with more of a focus on fantasy than the later novels. In some ways, this is a good thing, but I always preferred the comical elements to the fantastic elements in Pratchett’s work, although I admit that it’s a close call.

Really, The Colour of Magic is exactly what it is – an introduction to the Discworld, with a bit of story line and a few gags thrown in for good measure. It leads nicely into The Light Fantastic, but I personally feel that the series started to show its promise when Mort was released, and I could argue that you ought to read that first.

Either way, you can’t really go wrong with The Colour of Magic if you’re either an existing Pratchett fan or if you’re a lover of serious fantasy; otherwise, you might be better off reading one of Pratchett’s later books, which were more mainstream and more accessible, in my opinion. But then, you’ll miss out on some of the nuances and some of the self-references – it’s a tough one.
