Jeanne Hopkins and Jamie Turner – Go Mobile

Go Mobile is another one of the books in Wiley’s The New Rules of Social Media series, and so it automatically has a certain amount of kudos from me – that said, it is one of the weaker books in the series, which is a shame because it tackles one of the most relevant topics, the topic of location-based and mobile marketing.

See, the proliferation of the smartphone and the tablet computer have led to a new era in which the consumer is always connected, and that gives you the opportunity to reach them where and when you want to reach them, whether it’s when they’re at home and they’re hungry or whether it’s when they’re walking past your restaurant at dinner time.

This book has some fantastic practical tips that you can apply straight away, but I find it hard to feel the same passion for location-based and mobile marketing that I do for social media. I’m not sure whether that’s my fault, or whether I can blame the authors for failing to fill me with that passion, but I do feel as though the book could have done a little bit more, pushed a little harder and ultimately been as groundbreaking as the rest of the books in the series were.

Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.

Click.ology promises to teach you what works in online shopping, and it’s written by a guy who ought to know his stuff – Graham Jones, ‘the internet psychologist‘. I was skeptical at first, but I quickly came round to Jones’ lucid writing and his simple explanations of the psychological concepts which guide users around the internet in search of products.

Packed with advice and information, it’s backed up by thorough citations and excellent case studies, like that of Meat Pack. Meat Pack is a Guatemalan shoe store chain, which used location-based mobile marketing to ‘steal’ customers from rival stores. When one of their app users entered a rival shop, the app knew where they were and delivered an offer for 99% off at Meat Pack. The catch? The discount reduced by 1% every second, giving people about a minute and a half to run to the store. And run, they did – over 600 people claimed their discount in the first week alone.
