Mistress Pussycat tells the true story of author Joyce Snyder’s foray into the world of female dominatrices and submissive men. Snyder has worked in the adult industry for a substantial portion of her life, and so when she begins editing a lifestyle magazine for submissive men, she decides to learn more about the subject.
Her subsequent adventures are documented in this unflinching memoir which covers all sorts of sexual fetishes, from spanking and cross-dressing to dressing up as babies and slavery, which is apparently a thing. It turns out that a lot of men actually crave the loss of control that slavery enables, although I find the whole concept kind of alien.
The book was pretty well-written, as you would expect from a professional writer, and it was interesting enough for me to stick with it, although I was nowhere near as engrossed as I often become. I’m also not sure that I’d recommend it unless you have an existing interest in that sort of thing – it’s not that it’s a bad read, it’s just that it’s up against some pretty tough competition.
That said, I am glad that books like this exist, and it’s certainly eye-opening to read all about the world of BDSM, especially because I know nothing about it.
