Terry Deary – Groovy Greeks

I picked up a box set of the Horrible Histories books and so I’ve been reading through a bunch of them, which has started to make me feel a little jaded. This one gave me my mojo back though, and it took me by surprise because I’ve never been particularly keen on the Greeks. I’ve always preferred the Romans, Vikings and Egyptians.

The only thing that I will say is that Deary presented Archimedesdeath ray as proven historical fact, but I watch Mythbusters and I’m pretty sure they proved that it wasn’t possible. But then these books have been around for a while and so perhaps that was the latest thinking at the time. Other than that though, I thought this was pretty good!

Terry Deary – Awesome Egyptians

The Ancient Egyptians are one of my favourite historical civilisations and so perhaps it’s no surprise that I enjoyed reading this one. Deary has a knack for writing about history in a way that’s engaging for both children and adults, and while I don’t think I necessarily learned anything new, I’ve already read a lot of books on the subject. For a kid, it’d be a great little introduction into who the Egyptians were and how their culture worked.

The only reason I can’t give it 4* is that I was getting annoyed by the quizzes again. They’re designed to make the book more fun for kids, but as an adult I just wanted to be able to read the information. But I got over it.
