This little collection brings together a bunch of different F. Scott Fitzgerald stories together, including of course the titular story here. It’s fun and Fitzgerald has a stunning writing style that makes it easy to fall in love with his work.

This goes hand in hand with another one of Fitzgerald’s books that I can’t remember now, although I actually think that the other one was the better of the two. Either way, when you couple them together, they pretty much collect together all of Fitzgerald’s short stories.

It’s fun because I got into Fitzgerald through The Great Gatsby, but I kind of feel as though his short stories are better. They certainly allow him to explore more themes, and that can only be a good thing. There’s just something about his work that feels comforting to me, even though it is a little dated from time to time. He’s definitely worth reading.

Michael Morpurgo – War Horse

I had mixed feelings about this book, but there’s simply no denying how good it is. You can see how the plot was constructed, because it follows a formula, but it just does it so well that you can’t complain about it. It’s there, but it’s not important.

As for the story line – well, you probably already know it. But basically, it’s told from the horse’s point of view and follows what happens after the outbreak of the First World War, when he’s separated from his owner and has to go off to join the soldiers on the front line.

This isn’t the first Michael Morpurgo book that I’ve read, but it is the best. It was kind of predictable from start to finish, but it was also comforting like a warm bowl of soup. Make of that what you want. Just make some time in your schedule to give this a read, if only so you can say that you’ve read it. It’s worth it – honest.
